In this article we will be sharing the simplest retina's layer mnemonics, which is provided with 2 images which will help you to visualize the layers. Before, going through the retinal mnemonics let us get a brief introduction to the topic.

Retina is the innermost of the three tunics of the eye, surrounding the vitreous body and continuous posteriorly with the optic nerve. The retina is composed of light-sensitive neurons arranged in three layers; the first layer is made up of rods and cones and the other two transmit impulses from the rods and cones to the optic nerve. The rods are sensitive in dim light, and the cones are sensitive in bright light and are responsible for color vision.

Hence, the light-sensitive membrane forming the innermost layer of the eyeball. Grossly, the retina consists of three parts:optic part of retina, ciliary part of retina, and iridial part of retina. The optic part, the physiologic portion that receives the visual light rays, is further divided into two parts, pigmented part (pigment epithelium) and nervous part, which are arranged in the following layers:

Retinal Layers

The retina can be divided into 10 layers:

(1) the inner limiting membrane (ILM);
(2) the nerve fiber layer (NFL);
(3) the ganglion cell layer (GCL);
(4) the inner plexiform layer (IPL);
(5) the inner nuclear layer (INL);
(6) the outer plexiform layer (OPL);
(7) the outer nuclear layer (ONL);
(8) the external (outer) limiting membrane (OLM);
(9) the photoreceptor layer (PL),
(10) the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) monolayer.
