Tooth eruption is a process in tooth development in which the teeth enter the mouth and become visible. The first human teeth to appear, the deciduous (primary) teeth (also known as baby or milk teeth),erupt into the mouth from around 6 months until 2 years of age, in a process known as "teething".
These teeth are the only ones in the mouth until a person is about 6 years old creating the primary dentition stage. At that time, the first permanent tooth erupts and begins a time in which there is a combination of primary and permanent teeth, known as the mixed dentition stage, which lasts until the last primary tooth is lost. Then, the remaining permanent teeth erupt into the mouth during the permanent dentition stage.
Now, we will discuss the pattern of tooth/dental eruption with diagram and mnemonics which will make it easy for you to remember all the stuff in more organized manner.
Primary Teeth Mnemonics and Diagram.
Primary teeth |
1. Eruption progresses from medial to lateral except canines which erupt between 1st and 2nd molar.
2. Incisors erupt in clockwise fashion at a difference of 2 months starting from lower central incisor.
3. Lower and upper canines and molar at around similar time.
4. 2-4-6 rule for canines and molars.
2. Incisors erupt in clockwise fashion at a difference of 2 months starting from lower central incisor.
3. Lower and upper canines and molar at around similar time.
4. 2-4-6 rule for canines and molars.
Eruption of Primary Teeth:
Lower central incisor: 6 months
Upper central incisor: 8 months
Upper lateral incisor: 10 months
Lower lateral incisor: 12 months
1st molars: 12 months + 2 = 14 months
Canines: 14 months + 4 = 18 months
2nd molars: 18 months + 6 = 24 months

Points to Ponder.
1. Sequence: Mama Is In Pain, Papa Can Make Medicine,
i.e. 1st molar, 1st Incisor, 2nd Incisor, 1st Premolar, 2nd Premolar, Canine, 2nd Molar, 3rd Molar.
2. Eruption occurs sequentially at a difference of 1 year except the 3rd molar which erupts between 18-24 years.
3. Lower teeth appears few months earlier with exception of the lower canines which erupts almost 2 years earlier, i.e. 9 years.
4. Premolars appear earlier in upper jaw, i.e. lower 1st premolar would appear at 10 years and lower 2nd premolar would appear at 11 years.
5. Add 3 years to the age of eruption for the age of completion of calcification.
Eruption of Permanent Teeth :
1st molar: 6 years
1st incisor: 7 years
2nd incisor: 8 years
1st premolar: 9 years
2nd premolar: 10 years
canine: 11 years
2nd molar: 12 years
3rd molar: 18-24 years
Some cool facts for you:
1. Girls teeth usually erupt faster than boys.
2. Generally, teeth usually erupt in pairs so when the left-hand tooth erupts expect the right hand one to follow shortly afterwards.
3. Humans only have two sets of teeth however rat’s teeth and shark’s teeth continually grow throughout their lives. Sharks on average replace a tooth a week!
4. Deciduous teeth do more than just allow kids to chew, they actually guide the permanent teeth into place.
