Branches of Internal Iliac Artery

The exact arrangement of branches of the internal iliac artery is variable. Generally, the artery divides into an anterior division and a posterior division, with the posterior division giving rise to the superior gluteal, iliolumbar, and lateral sacral arteries. The rest usually arise from the anterior division.

Anterior division of Internal Iliac Artery.

Internal pudendal artery
Inferior vesical (uterine in females) artery
Middle rectal artery
Vaginal artery
Obturator artery
Umbilical artery

Posterior division of Internal Iliac Artery.

Iliolumbar artery
Lateral sacral artery
gluteal (superior and inferior) arteries

Mnemonics For Internal Iliac Artery Branches

The mnemonics is:

"I Love Going Places In My Very Own Underwear"
  • I  for Iliolumbar Artery
  • L   for Lateral Sacral Artery
  • G for Gluteal (superior and inferior) Arteries
  • P  for (internal) Pudendal Artery
  • I  for Inferior Vesical (uterine in females) Artery
  • M  for Middle Rectal Artery
  • V  for Vaginal Artery
  • O for Obturator Artery
  • U for Umbilical Artery

Point to Ponder:

The first three branches in the mnemonic (iliolumbar, lateral sacral and superior gluteal) are branches of the posterior division of the internal iliac artery and  the remaining branches are of the anterior division.
